Family
"FAMILY", AT
THE BASILICA OF ST. PATRICK BEGINS NOW!
During
the Summer months we are engaged in a campaign to encourage
all
parishioners to be involved in some parish activity or ministry.
The
campaign is called, "FAMILY". Our parish is our
church
family, and as in any family, all members have an important role to
play.
Please review the activities and ministries listed here
and sign-up for whatever you feel God is calling you to
undertake. If you have suggestions for
other ways to
serve the parish and community, please feel free to send them our
way:
family@oldcathedral.org
Once you have selected the activity or ministry you are interested in,
and
have reached out to the appropriate contact person, please click the “Count Me In!” button below to let everyone else know that there is
one more
parishioner who has responded to FAMILY!
As of right now,
155
people have committed to volunteer.
Below is a list of our activities and ministries. You can click on it
to view details or simply scroll down through this page to view our

Men’s and
Women’s Small Groups
In
God’s eyes, there is no such thing as a “Sunday Catholic”. We
are
called to live in union with God and in service to others every day of
the week. Here at the Basilica we recognize that to
live
out such a high calling we need the help of others.
Join a
small group where groups of men and women meet regularly to discuss the
joys and challenges of living the Christian life in
Manhattan. Learn from your peers as they strive to
grow in
their spiritual life. There are early morning,
evening, and
weekend groups.

RCIA Catechists
and Mentors
Thanks
be to God, we have a growing number of adults in our community who are
considering becoming Catholic for the first time or who are returning
to the Catholic faith, without having received all of the sacraments of
Initiation (Baptism, First Communion, and
Confirmation). We
are proud to have an excellent team of Catechists and Mentors who help
them along their journey through the “Rite of Christian Initiation of
Adults”. Join the team and be God’s instrument of
love and
salvation to those who are taking this important step in their
spiritual lives.

Lectors
Would
you like to proclaim the Word of God to your fellow parishioners by
serving as a lector at mass? This ministry involves more than
just reading in public; it is a call to regular meditation on the Word
of God and to transmit the richness of the Word to the
congregation.

Acolytes (altar
servers)
Acolytes
is the formal name for “altar servers”.
Men and woman
of all ages, and boys and girls, are invited to learn how to serve at
the altar during the celebration of the Eucharist.
Being an
altar server is an exceptional opportunity to be close to Jesus during
the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and to assist the priests and deacons as
they bring to us the Body and Blood of Jesus. You
will be
trained well so do not be afraid!

provide social venues for friendship and support among parishioners, as
well as to reach out and welcome old and new members of the parish into
greater participation. The Social Committee hosts an event
each
Sunday night after the 7:00pm mass as well as other social gatherings
to create a healthy family spirit in the
Basilica. We
would love you to be part of this important ministry!

Thursday mornings from 10:00am – 11:00am, parents are welcome to bring
their toddlers to the Parish House at 263 Mulberry for a “Play

fathers in
the parish community who are home during the day with their
children. Several mothers in the parish formed this group for

Church Greeters
and Ushers
A
simple smile and greeting as you enter the church makes a big
difference! Church greeters and ushers arrive 15
minutes
early to mass on Sundays (you can sign-up to come to whatever mass you
usually attend) and welcome people as they enter the church, hand out
music sheets, help with the collection, and distribute bulletins at the

Prayer Warriors
An
invaluable service you can offer our parish is
PRAYER. Be part of a team of prayer
warriors! This wonderful service involves
committing to
praying for the intentions of our parishioners on a daily or weekly
basis. You can do this on your own or in
groups.F Commit to praying for the needs of the parish, even if only
for a few minutes. Let the Prayer Warriors contact person
know
what your commitment is and she will keep track of the number of hours
of prayer we are offering the parish. The church is open
every
day, or do it from home!

Religious
Education through Family Catechesis and “Good Shepherd”
Help
pass on the Catholic faith to children and their parents by serving as
a catechist within our Family Catechesis program.
Here at
the Basilica, children who are preparing for First Communion or
Confirmation have weekly sessions do so in the context of family
education. This is based on our conviction that parents
should be
the primary educators of their children in the
faith. And
if they don’t know and practice the faith, it is unlikely that their
children will live the faith fully. Catechists
prepare both
children and parents for the reception of the sacraments.
Our
“Good Shepherd” program is designed to help very young children learn
the faith in an organic way even before they are of the age to prepare
for First Communion.

Music Ministry
http://oldcathedral.org/music.php
At
the Basilica, there are many ways to praise the Lord through
music. Since its opening, music at St. Patrick's has
glorified
God and uplifted spirits. The tradition of music at St. Patrick's dates
from its opening in 1815, and some of the finest musicians of the last
two centuries have passed through its doors.
Basilica Schola:
Every Basilica has a Schola Cantorum, or choir school, dedicated to the
singing of the exquisite sacred chants the Church has preserved and
promulgated through the centuries. Join us in the choir loft
every Sunday at 6:15PM to prepare the chants for the 7PM mass, as well
as monthly Evening Prayer. Joshua South, our cantor, leads
the
Schola through the basics of vocal technique and
pronunciation.
Everyone is welcome to join.
Amor Artis: Amor Artis is our
superlative choir-in-residence, under the direction of Stephen
Somary. The choir sings sacred masterworks at the 12:45PM
mass as
well as other liturgies throughout the year. The choir will
be
holding auditions in the fall for the 2011-2012 season.
http://www.amorartis.org/
Our
liturgies in Spanish and Chinese also include the participation of
enthusiastic choir members, and welcome all who wish to lift their
voices (or instruments) in support of congregational song.
In addition to singing, there are many other ways to contribute:
1.) Help at concerts by
ushering and handing out programs
2.) Assist in PR and the creation of press materials for concerts
3.) Stage and event management
All your effort is appreciated!

Cafe
Basilica
The
goal of Cafe Basilica is to reach out to our neighborhood through the
gift of music. On Sunday afternoons during the
Summer
months, for example, Cafe Basilica will host professional guitarists in
the courtyard of the old school building at 32 Prince
Street. Parishioner volunteers are needed to mingle
with
the many passers-by who will come in to listen to the music.
It
will be a great time to enjoy good music with them and to share all
that is going on in our Basilica family.

“Love
and Responsibility” Discussion Group
Come
learn and share about Love, Sexuality, and Relationships in the context
of Catholic Church’s teaching
Learn from Pope
John Paul II’s revolutionary “theology of the body”, an explanation of
God’s vision of the human body, sexuality, and
marriage.
After a very successful series last year that gathered over 75 young
adults every week, this Summer we will begin a second series to pick up
where we left off. Sessions are held every Tuesday
night
(beginning at the end of June) in the interior courtyard of the old
school building (entrance on Mott Street).

Pre-Cana Hosts
Beginning
in 2012, the Basilica will offer its own “Pre-Cana” course exclusively
to couples who are members of the parish and engaged to be
married. We will host two Pre-Cana weekends per
year, the
first weekend in January, and the first weekend in
June. We
are looking for couples or single people who can serve as hosts of the
weekend (organization and logistics).

Sacristy
Work (Ayudar en el orden y la limpieza de la Sacristia)
A wonderful service to the parish would be the regular
ordering and
cleaning of the Sacristy, where we hold the sacred vessels, linens, and
vestments for Liturgical celebrations. This service
would include general cleaning of the room and the care of the sacred
linens and vestments.
